I bought a Winchester 92 carbine (20″) clone off of a guy who lost his job. I bought it because I hunt in an area which is LEGAL to hunt in, but very few people DO. When they see a guy legally walking along the road, they often freak and call law enforcement. This is the Angeles National Forest, right behind Los Angeles. It is a corridor for commuters from Palmdale to Los Angeles. This gun I bought fits in a large nylon gym bag. So I can walk down the road armed, but not freaking out people on their way to/from work. I explained exactly what I am doing with the Rangers. They get it. They just told me to make sure the gun was empty and the action open, and to put the bullets in my pocket, and they would consider the gun “cased.”

Everyone told me the factory Magtech ammo was too weak for deer. I hunt at under 100 yards. This is not because I am a good hunter (I’m not.) But I am friendly with a ranger, and he knows the place well, and tells me where to be opening day, for a 60-80 yard shot (which, honestly, is about the furthest I can shot a rifle with open sights).

I paid a guy who reloads a lot of .44-40 for cowboy shooting to load me some “hot” loads for my carbine. He said the bullets “chronograph,” (???) at about 1,375 in his 24″ barrel.

Out of my 20″ barrel, will that be enough to knock down deer?

Holy crap man, it’ll knock down a deer and may knock you down at the same time, lol. 200 grains is about the size bullet used for moose and bear. You may not have much meat left when you get done with that deer.
